Our main backyard run needed two rolls, seamed down the middle, and about five months after installation I noticed the infill level had dropped along one stretch of it while running a leaf blower over the lawn — a shallow trench where there shouldn’t have been one. Kneeling down, a gap had opened along roughly four feet of that seam: narrow enough to miss standing up, but wide enough at its worst point — maybe three-eighths of an inch — that infill was sifting straight through and the black backing underneath was visible. It hadn’t happened overnight; phone photos of the yard from about six weeks earlier still showed the seam tight, so whatever was pulling it apart had been working gradually. My first assumption was that the seam tape had failed — the obvious suspect any time a seam opens. I pulled the turf back on both sides to check, and the tape was still stuck down flat and intact on either edge. The turf itself had pulled away from the tape, not the tape from the turf.
It’s Usually Tension, Not the Seam Itself
A seam is only as good as how the two pieces were tensioned before they were joined. If one side was stretched slightly more than the other during installation, or if the whole lawn wasn’t allowed to relax in the sun for a couple of hours before seaming (synthetic backing does shift slightly with heat), the two edges settle at a different rate over the following months and the bond line takes the strain until it gives. The tape itself was intact on both sides where I pulled it back to look — it just wasn’t holding two pieces that were pulling in different directions anymore.
There was a second factor that made this stretch worse than the rest of the seam, which held fine everywhere else along its length. That four-foot section runs right along the line where the house’s afternoon shadow falls — one side sits in full sun most of the day, the other shaded until early afternoon. Synthetic backing moves with heat more than most people expect, and two pieces sitting at noticeably different temperatures for hours every day aren’t just settling into a stretched position once after install — they’re expanding and contracting relative to each other daily, indefinitely. A seam only slightly mismatched in tension can usually absorb that. One already under uneven tension and also flexed by a daily temperature swing is the one that eventually gives.
Closing the Gap
- Pulled back turf on both sides of the gapped section, about a foot past where it was still bonded.
- Brushed out and set aside the infill that had migrated into the gap so I could redistribute it after.
- Cut a fresh strip of seaming tape and centered it under the gap.
- Before applying adhesive, worked both edges back together by hand and checked that the grain (the direction the blades lean) matched across the seam — a mismatched grain is what makes a re-closed seam visible even when it’s structurally solid.
I could have skipped pulling a full foot back and worked only on the visible gap, but that shortcut is how a second gap opens right beside the first one a few months later — turf next to a repair is under the same uneven tension that caused the original gap, so tying the new bond into turf that’s still fully secured on both sides gives it something solid to hold onto, not just a patch over the symptom.
- Applied seam adhesive to the tape, pressed both edges down firmly into it, and weighted the full four-foot section with boards for 24 hours.
- Re-brushed the infill back over the repaired stretch once it had cured.
Four months later it’s holding with no new gap, though I’m treating that as provisional rather than proven — I’ll be watching that stretch through next year’s hottest weeks, since the sun-and-shade cycle is the real test, not just the calendar.
Checking It Wasn’t the Base Underneath
Before trusting this was a tension-and-heat problem and not something structural, I checked the base under the gap for a dip or soft spot — pressed a finger straight down through the opening and felt for give. If the crushed stone base had settled or washed out there, the fix would need to be different: pull the turf back further, re-compact the base, and only then deal with the seam, or the gap would reopen within weeks regardless of how well it was re-taped. The base felt firm and level all the way across, which is part of what told me this was happening at the seam, not underneath it. If a similar-looking gap has soft or noticeably lower ground beneath it, start there instead.
What Would Have Prevented It
Let the full width of turf sit unrolled in the sun for at least an hour before seaming, so both pieces are at the same temperature and have relaxed to the same degree — seaming a piece that’s still cool next to one that’s already warmed up is a mismatch that shows up later, not on day one. Where a seam’s path crosses a permanent sun/shade line, that’s worth a second look during install. And check a seam again after the yard’s first stretch of hot weather, since that’s when uneven tension from the original install actually reveals itself.
A repair like this is well within reach for a weekend job — materials ran under thirty dollars, and the work itself, not counting the 24-hour cure wait, was under an hour. For a gap longer than four feet, or one in a spot with heavy foot traffic, I’d lean toward hiring it out — a proper seaming iron and heat-activated tape bond more evenly across distance than hand-applied adhesive does.
