The strip of turf along our front walkway started showing three or four small weed sprouts about a year in — every single one of them right along the seam line, none anywhere else in that stretch. I noticed them on a Saturday while sweeping infill back into a couple of low spots after a stretch of heavy rain, little green threads maybe two inches tall, easy enough to miss if I hadn’t already been crouched that close to the ground. Before pulling them, I walked the rest of that same run of turf, maybe fifteen feet of open field on either side of the seam, and found nothing else. Not one sprout in the field itself, only right along that seam line. That pattern is what told me this wasn’t a weed-barrier failure across the whole area, it was specific to the seam itself — and it’s the reason I didn’t end up pulling turf across the whole front strip to go looking for more.

Why Seams Are the Weak Point, Not the Open Field

Across the open field, turf backing plus a weed barrier underneath is a genuinely solid barrier — there’s no gap for a seed to find soil through. At a seam, though, even a well-closed one has a hairline join, and seaming tape doesn’t always get pressed flush with the weed barrier underneath it during installation. That tiny gap is enough for a wind-blown seed sitting in the infill right at the seam to find its way down to soil and germinate, even when the barrier itself is intact everywhere else.

There was a second factor that made this particular seam more vulnerable than the rest of the yard’s seams: it ran right along the edge of a paver border, and the weed barrier’s overlap there was only about an inch instead of the two to three inches I’d left along the rest of the run. Working that close to a hard paver edge left less room to lay the barrier generously, and at the time it didn’t seem like it would matter. It mattered — that extra inch or two of overlap is really the whole difference between a sealed join and a gap a seed can find. Heat likely played a smaller supporting role too: that section sits in direct sun most of the day while the rest of the walkway gets afternoon shade from a hedge, and the tape there felt noticeably stiffer and less tacky than the shaded tape when I pulled it up.

Closing It Off

  1. Pulled the weeds by hand, roots and all, rather than just trimming the tops — the taproots had clearly found actual soil, not just infill, and trimming alone would have looked like a fix for a couple of weeks before a new sprout pushed back up through the same spot.
  2. Pulled the turf back at the seam and confirmed the weed barrier underneath was intact but had that slightly loose overlap right where the seam tape sat.
  3. Re-taped the weed barrier’s overlap with waterproof seam tape before re-closing the turf seam over it. This is the step it’s tempting to skip, since the turf seam tape on top looks perfectly fine and re-taping the barrier means pulling turf back up along the paver edge. But the turf seam tape was never the weak point — it holds turf edges together, not weeds out. Re-closing the turf without fixing the barrier underneath would have looked finished without solving anything.
  4. Applied a pre-emergent granular weed control along the seam line specifically, not the whole yard, before re-brushing infill back in.

If your seam weeds are showing up along a section that runs next to a hard edge — a paver border, a patio slab, a driveway — check the barrier overlap there first. That’s the variation that made our case different from a seam running through open soil, where there’s more room to lay a generous overlap and less reason for it to end up thin.

No new sprouts along that seam in the eight months since, through one full wet season. I’d still want to see it through a second one before calling the repair permanent — a barrier patch is a real fix, not a guess, but eight months in our climate isn’t the same as a couple of years of proof.

Telling This Apart From a Base or Drainage Problem

Not everything that turns up green along a seam is a weed. If what you’re seeing is more of a mossy, spongy patch than an actual sprout, or water tends to pool in that same spot after a hard rain, that points to a base or drainage problem instead of a barrier gap, and pulling the seam tape won’t fix it. A weed needs to root into real soil to germinate; moss and algae just need moisture sitting on the infill surface, which usually means compaction or a low spot. Checking for standing water after the next rain, before doing any seam work, is a quick way to rule that out first.

Where to Actually Check

If you’re dealing with weeds in an otherwise solid artificial lawn, check the seams and the perimeter edges before assuming the weed barrier failed across the board — those are the two spots most likely to have a real gap, and treating the whole yard when the problem is a four-foot seam line is a lot more work than it needs to be. A seasonal check of just the seams and edges catches this early, and doing it in a dry stretch rather than the middle of a rainy spell makes the work itself easier — dry turf and dry barrier tape lift and re-lay cleanly, where wet infill just makes a mess of it.

If I were paying someone to do this instead of doing it myself, I’d expect the cost to be mostly labor for pulling and re-closing that one section of seam, plus a small amount for tape and granular weed control — nothing exotic, no special equipment. The part that actually costs something is the time spent working in the heat, on your knees, prying up a seam that was never meant to come apart easily.
